Beautiful Loser to Show at 2008 Philadelphia Film Festival!

After a long hiatus, we finally have some news here at Life With Gordo!

Adam's latest movie, "Beautiful Loser" will premiere at the 2008 Philadelphia Film Festival on Friday, April 11 at 7:15 PM EST. The screening will occur at the Ritz East Theater 2.

Tickets are priced at $10.00.

First and foremost, happy belated birthday to Adam! He's the big 2-3!

Also, the photo gallery has been moved. PhotoSite is shutting down, so for the time being, it is at PhotoBucket. The album is public so there should be no worries now. If Giggles and I find a more suitable site, we will let you guys know.

I know this blog has been lagging, but hopefully that will change once "Beautiful Loser" starts to make the festival rounds. Also, I'm hoping that Giggles will soon make a post here. Her presence in sorely missed.

As one of the lucky viewers of this new, yet unreleased independent film, I can
honestly say that "Beautiful Loser" is the kind of movie I wish we could find more often at our local theatres.

This is not a ‘blow it up, run a lot, shoot & stomp, CGI the heck out of it’ blockbuster or an ‘I’m an idiot, but aren’t I funny in a crass sort of way?’ kind of film. * It is a moving story about a guy who, to the rest of the world, seems like a real loser, but whose heart and loyalty make him the best friend anyone could ever want - even if people (including him!) don’t realize it.

* This touching love story about a group of high school kids whose friendships continue through their adult lives also has an engaging and off-beat spiritual bent, and delves into what each would give or do for a second chance at true happiness.

* As the director’s plot write-up puts it: “His parents named him Reginald Regineld. His friends call him ‘Ditto.’ At the age of eleven he decided he wasn’t going to do anything with his life. And that was going pretty well until senior year when he saw Tracy. This wasn’t so much love at first sight as much as it was ‘completely head over heels gonna get her at any price even if I make a complete fool of myself’ love at first sight. And it would burn for decades. Whether she loved him or not…”

* Not yet picked up for distribution, this film truly has wide appeal. It is thoughtful, heartfelt… and a movie both men and women will enjoy.

* Here’s hoping that Hollywood will step up and give it more than a direct-to-video audience - it deserves it!

* Great score and soundtrack, too!

From Disney to Indie

“I was kind of the black sheep with the Disney kids... I didn't really fall into ‘the Disney mold.'”

You might recognize him as charming mop-top Gordo from Disney's smash hit, Lizzie McGuire, or from the irreverent Jewish comedy, When Do We Eat? where he acted alongside Ben Feldman. Either way, actor Adam Lamberg is all grown-up now and a student at the University of California, Berkeley.

When I called him, he was strolling through Central Park. It's no surprise that he was out and about, considering that he only gets to spend time in his hometown of New York City during school breaks. During his walk, I was able to get the scoop on his latest movie projects and his time in the Mouse House.

Change of Luck

How did you get your acting start?
When I was 7, my cousins were young, funky bohemian students at NYU and were making friends in that scene. One of their roommates was a casting director who got me an [American Express] audition, and I miraculously booked the job. I was hooked on acting from that point forward.

As a die-hard New Yorker, what inspired you to make the eventual move westward?
I moved to L.A. when I was almost 16 for Lizzie McGuire and lived there for about two years. My mom is a public high school teacher, and with [the benefits of] pension and sabbaticals, she couldn't really afford to leave her job, so I moved out there with my father.

Some Hollywood types predicted Lizzie McGuire wouldn't make it. Did its success surprise you?
I always had a bad string of luck when it came to pilots and commercials. I never really got those kinds of jobs, so I expected [Lizzie] probably wouldn't get picked up, knowing my luck. There was certainly a lot of eventual success.

In what ways did television differ from your previous theater experiences?
It's a lot more rewarding to go out and do an hour-and-a-half play and nail it. The live audience makes it so much more satisfying. You actually feel like you're acting. The workload was relatively comparable. While working on a play, I'd go to school from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and rehearse from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. On a TV show, you're there for nine hours a day, but you're only working two or three.

Were you tight with Hilary Duff and other cast members?
I was kind of the black sheep with the Disney kids. I was uninterested in making friends with most of them. I didn't really fall into “the Disney mold.” I was more or less the kid hanging out with the crew members and got along with them far better.

Beyond Lizzie

Tell us a little bit about your Jewish upbringing.
My father is Jewish; my mother is not. All the influences came from the Jewish side of my family. You wouldn't think my mom was a nice WASP-y French-Canadian. I definitely consider myself a cultural Jew.

Your background must've come in handy when filming When Do We Eat?, right?
It was very zany and madcap. Working on it, you really felt that vibe. It was a great cast with interesting characters. The film was a little over the top, but when does a Passover seder go smoothly?

So how did your turn in When Do We Eat? lead to your current role in Beautiful Loser?
Beautiful Loser was a really raw independent project. The producer of When Do We Eat? decided to help out this little fledgling project and recommended me to the director. He was a first-time director who was very intent on listening to his actors and getting feedback.

How did your close working relationship with the director enrich the experience?
After 15 years in the business, it can get a little repetitive and boring. This was the first project I've worked on where I felt like I really pitched in and helped get it made. It was a blast. I've always had that desire to write, direct and produce, and this was the first time I experienced that side of it.

Anti-Celebrity

It's funny that you're the only Lizzie McGuire cast member to not release an album. Was that a conscious choice?
Mostly due to lack of talent, even though that doesn't really stop everyone. I have no desire to be a massive celebrity.

Now you're studying at UC Berkeley. What do you do in your precious off-set time?
I enjoy the good company of friends and stimulating conversation. I've seen the U.S. pretty extensively and gone on some cross-country road trips. I've also been to the Caribbean and Europe. [My love of travel] is one of the reasons that I'm a geography major. A Birthright [Israel] trip is definitely something I would like to do one day.

This picture alone was only posted for my sake because I posted a simple comment to say "I'm here!" So if you want more Adam Lamberg pictures, comment or something! It doesn't have to be anything big...just a simple "Can't wait for the movie!" or "Great pictures!" will suffice.

New Adam Lamberg Interview

While performing a typical blogsearch, I came across a new Adam Lamberg interview! It's quite an interesting and enjoyable find. The guy who held the interview is from Bishop, Texas and works for a radio station....so I'm still in the process of finding the audio version to it. But here is the text version!

Not too many people in our older crowd will know the name Adam Lamberg, but there are some who might remember it from their days in high school or even before that.

Adam is at the moment most well known for his role as co-star to Hilary Duff in the hit Disney show Lizzie McGuire. Playing the social misfit and all around "nice guy" by the name of David "Gordo" Gordon, it wasn't long until both Duff and Lamberg made their way to the big screen.

With the success of the Lizzie McGuire movie, Duff has as we all know made her way to the top as a teen queen, but what of her co-stars?

Being a fan of independent films I one day found a magazine listing all of the movies debuting for the next year. This was not odd to find being employed by a movie theatre, but that list contained movies I have never heard of.

One of these films was titled "When Do We Eat?" Sparking my interest, I started research on the film and found myself not only interested in the plot, but was left feeling that this movie would be worth looking into a bit further.

After finally getting a full cast list I happened to run across Adam's name and thought why not try for an interview.

After making contact with the film's producer Steven J. Wolfe I was granted the time to speak with Adam. Things went very well and I was surprised at how normal the conversation was. To be perfectly honest, it was like talking with a friend on campus.

I was first surprised to learn that Adam is now 21; many of us would not have guessed that he was actually two of three years older than his co-stars back on the set of Lizzie McGuire.

21 yrs. old. As we all know, that is a fun age. "Ya for the last six months it's been pretty fun. I'm more than sure many of us remember the fun we had at that age, but more than that we know that age can be a scary thing. I thought twenty was pretty scary, like not being able to call myself a teenager anymore, and feeling like an adult. That kind of made me nervous."

Oh how true that is when we start feeling old, already it is clear that being the same age as many of us Adam would relate to the things we deal with as young adults. Also, like many of us Adam is also a college student. At the moment, Adam is a student at Berkeley and is majoring in Geography.

One thing that we deal with as students is roommates. Born in New York, attending Berkeley meant moving to say the least for Adam. At the moment, he finds himself sharing a five bedroom house with friends both male and female. Having shared seven bedrooms with good friends, I can tell you there are always problems.

As the interview went on, we talked more about his current role in the film "When Do We Eat" which made its debut in Texas on April 21 in both Dallas and Houston. I for one made the four hour drive for what can only be described as a movie enjoyed from start to finish.

The film focuses on the Stuckman family at Passover dinner. Like most of our families, they have their differences and do get on each others' nerves. One thing however keeps them together. Lionel Stuckman is the autistic son of Ira Stuckman. Lionel, played by Lamberg dislikes family fights, so naturally as Lionel gets upset the family puts aside their differences.

As we know, there is only so much a person can take and by the end of the film, the Stuckman family comes very close to falling apart, and again are brought back together by Lionel.

The film also focuses around the fact that the head of the house, Ira Stuckman, is drugged by his stoner son Zeke Stuckman. This of course adds as great comic relief and leaves the audience with great one liners.

Lamberg himself is in fact of Jewish decent and when asked about his relation to the film was able to give us his take on the matter. "I consider myself more of a cultural Jew; I'm not religious in any way. The family in this film is really fake about the Judaism, they're not true Jews."

Adam himself seemed very down to earth and was a very entertaining interview. In its entirety both Adam and I can be heard laughing at one time or another. Like many of us Adam is very fond of music and has a somewhat eclectic taste for it. "I like anything good…..I'm really into Reggae." As a musician and fan of Reggae I pursued this a bit further and found that again we had similar interests. "I like Barrington Leavey, he's the best; and Toots and The Maytals, are also the best." And I have to agree Toots is amazing.

When asked about his current work Adam informed me that at that moment they were completing the filming for a new movie called "Beautiful Loser" in which he has the leading role of a person who has decided as a teenager to do nothing with his life. "It's a nice little slice of life film, some characters fall in love, some fall out of love, my character gets his heart broken, I guess I'm the beautiful loser."

This I found very interesting after watching "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" because that is how I looked at his portrayal of "Gordo." "I'd say that's a fair cop, I mean when I look at our kid Gordo but I guess that applies to a lot of people." One thing that made that show more enjoyable was the blooper reels in which I could have sworn I heard some profanity. "Oh I'm sure you did. I had to watch my mouth when I was working on that set."

So how did all of this come about and how did Adam get into the acting business? Well at the age of seven a cousin told his parents they should take him to an audition that was being held for a credit card commercial. "Through some fluke I got the part, and it was a five or six day shoot and I just had a lot of fun and it was a blast and after that I was hooked."

With all of this just sounding so great I couldn't help but ask; what would Adam do if he had to stop acting? "Oh that's a tough one man. I have always wanted to open up a brewery slash goat farm. Brew some beer, make some goat cheese, but that's kinda dreamy." That I have to admit would be a place to visit.

Well to sum things up, Adam is an interesting actor who delivers a great performance in "When Do We Eat." The film in itself was worth the wait as well as the drive to see it. I for one can't wait for the DVD release.

John Nolte noted that "Adam always had time for his fans" and that it was like "hanging out with Elvis." During the fair scenes, Adam was "swamped" with "young girls" and "graciously signed every autograph, posed for every picture, and made their day."

This past month has given us no new Adam news. But I thought I'd make an appearance on the blog and link you fans to some footage that may be unfamiliar to you.

Back in 2002, I believe, Adam was a co-host on an educational program called "What's Up in the Environment?" To my knowledge, it aired on PBS at least once. (I had the unexpected pleasure of seeing most of it one Sunday morning when channel surfing. Had I not been surprised to see it, I would have tried to record it, instead of waiting for a later showing.)

Giggles and I would love to have screencaps for you guys but this item is quite pricey. So for now, we will settle with some very short video clips from the program, all of which feature Adam's voice and one that shows him.

DVD Cover and a Slight Alteration

Well, after seeing a website list "deleted scenes" as an extra for the WDWE DVD, I could not help but do a more thorough search on the DVD extras.

I knew that Hart Sharp Video was releasing the DVD, but I did not know they had a page for the DVD up already. And well, there's a few interesting things on here.

First of all, they have a DVD cover up, which you can see in this post. I'm not entirely sure I like the cover. I'm sure Giggles would agree with me here, but I cringed when I read the line "My Big Fat Jewish Seder." The movie never used this tagline when it was released in theatres, and I personally do not like how this box seems to be using the success of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" for promotion purposes.

I do however like how Adam's name is listed 3rd. That's always nice to see.

The other bit of information is the DVD extras have slightly changed at this time. We still get the actors' auditions, (thank God!), and a commentary...but...it is a director's commentary. So that means no Adam. *sighs* We should at least get a few quotes about Adam, but it isn't the same as us actually listening to him.

So, first he skips out of the LM commentary, and now he's absent for the WDWE one?

Oh well, at least we will be getting some deleted scenes. So maybe we'll see an extra Adam scene! *crosses fingers*

As always, great detective work, Snoopy! I too have been on the look out for new information regarding Adam projects these last few weeks, but unfortunately I am nowhere near as good a snoop as Snoopy here is...hence the nickname. ^_^

If Adam does indeed do the commentary, perhaps some updates concerning Beautiful Loser will crop up in the midst of conversation??? Ya never know. Commentaries can be quite surprising...

DVD Extras Announced!

It looks like the "When Do We Eat" DVD is going to have some nice extras for the fans! Yesterday, I was looking on the Rotten Tomatoes website, and according to them, we will have audio commentary, a behind the scenes look at the movie, a making of actor's auditions, as well as your standard theatrical trailer.

I'm seriously stoked about most of these extras. Both Giggles and I have always wanted to see some audition footage on Adam, and this might very well be our chance! Whoo-hoo! We're also crossing our fingers that Adam will participate in the audio commentary.

Now if we can only get some more information about "Beautiful Loser"...

DVD Date Announced!

According to Amazon.com, When Do We Eat will be released on DVD on August 22! Now, while we don't know what extras will be included yet, it is still cool to know the actual date.

What makes it even better is that the release is around Giggles and mine birthdays. Yay!

Okay so it was one page...which confuses me since there is obviously another 2-3 pages of a Popstar magazine Adam interview floating around out there in some issue somehwere. We'll have to track those down. But the back issue came, and finally we have this page in better quality as well as a blurb on him a few pages later! Scans will be posted in the Adam Lamberg photo gallery under the "DVD Screencaps" photo album...even though they aren't DVD screencaps, we have yet to get around to sorting through the pictures. I'm kinda worried now because the Popstar website was supposed to have sent me an e-mail confirmation about the back issue that I ordered...but uh, they haven't and the order was definitely placed two days ago...and I've yet to get anything in the mail. Are they slow or am I just impatient?

All I'm saying is, they better send that issue. It was fairly inexpensive since it was a few years old but if they don't send it I'm gonna be real mad. And I don't think they want that...right, Snoopy?

Not sure how many of you remember this December 2003 issue of Popstar Magazine, but it was the "Hilary Duff issue" that featured a four-page spread on Adam back in his Lizzie McGuire days. And while there are thumbnail scans of this article floating around on the internet (namely at DBS of course), they are near impossible to read and their larger counterparts are near impossible to find. Therefore, Snoopy and I have decided to order the back issue, which we will scan and post on the new web site when it arrives. It was a very interesting article that had some good quotes and some very nice pictures as well. But hopefully it won't be the last appearance that Adam makes in print!

DVD Release News

In response to an e-mail, I learned today that "When Do We Eat" will be heading to DVD around August or September.

To say the least, Giggles and I had some mixed feelings when learning about this. While we are glad that a DVD will be coming out, we feel that this is a sign that ThinkFilm has given up hope that the movie will generate any more revenue.

But yet, how can they expect this film to shine when distribution of this movie was less than great. While certain areas of the country were given more than their fair share of theatres, other parts had zip. Coming from one of those "zip" areas, I had a group of people who were eager and more than ready to see this film. I guess, we'll just settle for watching this movie on a Friday night, while huddled around the DVD player.

But yet, I've left out a certain other part of the country. There were many places who got this movie for a single week. We were all told to spread the word about the movie, but yet, this idea can't work. How can these people tell others to go see a movie, when it was uncertain if the movie would be there the following week?

But alas, in the end, we can only move ahead, and just look forward to this DVD.

Weekend Estimates for WDWE...

"When Do We Eat" grossed $59,300 in its 3rd weekend at theatres, bringing its total to $370,000. This is close to a 50% decrease from last weekend! Sure, sure, sure, you can throw out the excuse that this is a limited release. But for those of you who are able to see this movie, do so! Because otherwise, it won't reach the ones of us who are dying to see this, myself included.

Giggles and I both know that this movie seems to have a love/hate relationship with audiences. Some people love it for the truths the movie speaks, while others are highly offended by it. But please, do not let other people tell you whether or not you should see the movie. Go see it and form your own opinion about it.

So us here in the Adam Lamberg fan community (yes, it does exist to any of you mean-spirited people who thought otherwise) are pretty excited that Adam has finished shooting a new film. For over two years we've been tracking his first post-Lizzie indie, "When Do We Eat?", which was directed by first-time director Salvador Litvak and was recently released in limited U.S. cities.

The news that he had another project in the works came at the perfect time (around early February) since it is unclear as to when some of us will get to see WDWE, so this serves as a bit of a diversion until then...

I would say that my partner in crime and I have quite a bit of information on this film for it still being in post-production, but I don't want to give anything away. The one production still (see above) that was posted on film editor Zack Arnold's blog has Adam sporting a Topher Grace-ish type haircut...

Quite charming if you ask me. ^_~
